Kanalizasyon (2009)

How far can the quality of Television fail? What is it that we watch religiously everyday ? Is it really the media’s fault? Are we blaming the right people , or is it us?  What is the definition of entertainment? Maybe we are exposed to so much information everyday, when we finally go home all we need is some bullshit to empty our minds… Kanalizasyon is one of those movies where you laugh too hard, and think too hard.

The life of a window cleaner changes once he gets a life changing job offer. He loves watching television and now he just needs to come up with show ideas for a tv channel. He comes up with the most ridiculous ideas which look stupid but in fact extremely close to today’s reality. Okan Bayulgen, the lead , is a famous actor, hosting a different show everyday. He basically owns our T.V. experience. This is the movie where he harshly cricitizes the concept that makes him rich.

Korkuyorum Anne / What’s a Human Anyway? (2004)

Movies like these make me so hopeful towards the resurrecting Turkish film scene. Turkish vision is not beaten wives, extreme family dramas, wars and mafias, like most films represent. It is a more ironic version. Life in Turkey is what Korkuyorum Anne pictures sometimes: small neighborhoods where people struggle through life by holding on to each other. They have dramas problems, but they adapt to each other somehow. There is tragedy but people are damn funny.Maybe this is life in general…

I will definetely start following the Turkish director Reha Erdem after this movie. The characters are so developed and real, the feelings are emphasized harmonically bringing out colors of life. For me Reha Erdem’s style reminded me of Jean- Pierre Jeunet  (Amelie , Micmacs, The city of lost children) in this sense. Korkuyorum Anne is highly entertaining and smiley. Truly an original picture.

Eagle vs Shark (2007)

What a beautiful love story of two socially challenged people. Very carefully designed scenes wrapped around by stunning scenary of New Zealand landscape. Two losers?! fall in love in this quirky New Zealand romantic comedy and explore their own meaning of getting along.

Idiot with a Tripod

Short film directed by Jamie Stuart .American film critic and screen writer Roger Ebert claimed this short film as a prospective Academy Award candidate. Carefully picked out moments telling a story of  a blizzard scenery in New York City.

Pazar: Bir Ticaret Masali / The Market: A Tale of Trade (2008)

The story begins in an Eastern Turkey border city. The conditions are hard and a A black market trader tries to afford his family while fighting with his alcohol and gambling habit. He often crosses the Acerbaijan border to bring goods and sells in Turkey. He always wonders ”how can I become rich already?”

The director Ben Hopkins benefits from the deep character anaylsis of British movies. Every character is portrayed very clearly ; they express themselves with strong personal expressions.

The performance of every single actor, brings the movie closer to the perfection. The Eastern accent is spoken so well and fluently that the viewer feels warm and more familiar to the culture and social interaction in the area.

The kindness and tenderness of the wife to the struggling husband. The competition between the local traders.A child hearted elderly tired of life. Excitement of winning and dissapointment of losing. At the end of every day a hand reaches out to a cold beer stored outside the kitchen window. The click and the sip..

A joyful movie

Get Him to the Greek (2010)

So an’ sooo funny. I almost got injured lauging to the producer Sergio (P. dIddY) feeling feather while on ”the Jeffrey”.

A movie of constant running, fighting, drinking and puking craziness. The DVD cover calls the movie next Hangover, but I think Get Him to the Greek is a more brilliant ”on the way action” picture with absolutely hilarious actors.

Vavien (2009)

A Turkish dark comedy genious by Durul and Yagmur Taylan. The story is written by Engin Gunaydin. An electrician the husband (Engin Gunaydin) and a cleaning lady wife (Binnur Kaya) live in a small town in Istanbul

The husband is in debt and in love with a woman from a night club.He is unhappy with everything in his life.

The wife is not the brighest person and dependent to her husband. Not to mention the money she is hiding from him.

The moves takes off from a wife murder attempt to the path of a happy life.

The movie makes you chuckle although the overall feeling is sadness. Beautiful scenes portray this unusual series of events happening to an ordinary family.

me NO like

Here are the two movies I wanted to cut myself watching. The reason for this extreme behavior is definetely not because they were dramatic, it is because they were extremely boring and pointless.

First of all this is one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen.  I patiently saw most of the film but then I realized, I have already seen it last year. I remembered how I decided to forget about it all. If you are making a sad movie, at least include good imaging or make a point right? Well no, the movie just leaves you there, hanging and depressed…

In short this is a British Guy Richie wanna be movie. It is trying so hard to be artsy and tough with smart words, but in the end it is a big failure in my opinion. Honestly I have not seen the whole movie because I could not handle the ”oh look at me I am talking for 10 minutes for every reaction which makes me such a cool movie”. By the way the acting is a big reason for this failure. The actors are so not right for their role. Nothing ever happens and it is just a bad constant imitation.

The Illusionist ,L’illusionniste (2010)

It is nice to know that there are still movies out there that can tell you a fairly touching story for 90 minutes with hardly any dialogue. The expressions, the looks, the cities and the people come together to paint a small section of an illusionist’s life in 2010 made ”The Illusionist”.

It is quite hard to understand and follow the character’s deep feelings due to the limited dialogue. What old man and the little girl shares is pretty repetitive throughout the movie. But I believe what makes this movie beautiful is the colorful characters of show business they encounter around Paris, London and Edinburgh.  My favorites are definitely the acrobat triplets 🙂 Enjoy!

Les petits mouchoirs (2010)

Nobody is perfect, and nobody is normal. Here are a  couple of friends who are not afraid to expose their mind. The whole experience was that I packed my luggage and went on a vacation with them. It is a heart warming , very realistic and absolutely hilarious movie without even trying too hard.
